2nd Opinion Very Likely to Bring New Diagnosis

A recent study found that nearly 90 percent of medical patients who come to the Mayo Clinic for a ‘second opinion’ get a completely new diagnosis.
Eighty-eight percent of people who visit the renowned Minnesota clinic for a second opinion on a health issue end up leaving with a different diagnosis than they came in with.
Out of 286 Mayo Clinic patients studied, only 12 percent had their primary care doctor’s diagnosis confirmed by the staff. The rest either received a new diagnosis or a “refined” version of their original.
The clinic said the study proved that patients have a better chance of both receiving life-saving treatments or preventing unnecessary surgeries by asking another physician about their health.
Additionally, the clinic said that in some cases, a second opinion can save families from fears about an illness diagnosis that would otherwise carry genetic implications down the line.
Editor’s Note:  The 250-plus diagnoses studied by the Mayo Clinic that were “changed or refined” were made by primary care physicians and not specialists. We wonder how many of the nation’s 2.5 million psoriasis might actually be suffering from PRP?
